References

Hi,

I was at my previous employer for over a decade and left last year. I was told that I would only be given a basic reference.

Because of this, I am finding it difficult to get a second reference. I don't have any friends (not that they could provide a reference). I recently attended an interview which I passed subject to references. My second referee that i put down is related to me but I didn't put that he was. However, he has been asked on the reference form if he is related to me, which compromised his position and I certainly don't want that.

The only other person I could ask is a Uni lecturer on a course that I part-completed. There is no one else I can think of.

Any ideas???

Many thanks for your help.

Ps I know the above looks bad but I don't want to give out too many details.

  • your dr? Solicitor?

I presume you explain that you only have one due to only working this one job since Uni? (I presume you have only worked one job since then?

  • Hi Takeaway Addict,

    Thanks for your reply.

I have been working for nearly 30 years and prior to my last job, worked in a variety of jobs for between 1-3 years at a time. Because of the way I was forced out of my last role, my health suffered.

I have already asked my GP and they don't provide references and I haven't really got a Solicitor.

After being out of work for nearly a year, I am desperate to get back in albeit on a much lower level and work my way back up again. But this may scupper my chances. I was told that I answered my questions very well in the interview which is good as I was so nervous.

I read online about maybe getting a character reference possibly from a neighbour. (I know I am clutching at straws here!!)it did also say from friends (none due to shyness) or volunteering work (I haven't done any.)
  • can you not use the company before last?

Anyone you have worked with that was at the previous company with you who you are still in contact with? They can give a personal reference.

  • The previous employment was 1998-2001 so too long ago and the way in which I was forced out from previous employers means that I can't get a second reference from them. They are notorius for not giving references - I have since found out.

No - AP007 means do you know anyone from there, like, personally? To chat to, to have a drink with etc?

Not the pervious one to the one we are talking about I meant the latest job.

I have made friends at all jobs I have had and am still in touch with a FD, a CEO and other staff that are now friends of mine. Two of which have given me personal references etc and a few have given me recommendations on LinkedIn :)

Me too; the best references are the ones that you stay in contact with after work ended. I have BBC presenters and all sorts on my Linked In to call on for references ;) It's not what you know, it's all about networking.
