This was the document I was sent when I enquired further about the role and this is what it said:

Being a moderator:

We would like someone to be dedicated, hard working, flexible. Must be good at multitasking, and work well under pressure.

Your duties as a Mod include working at least 40 “blocks” per month on a schedule (you may work 2 blocks in 1 day but no more), each block is 3 hours. You also must work 2 full weekends each month and be available to work on major holidays such as Thanksgiving (USA Holiday), Boxing Day (UK Holiday) as well as Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day. We have special scheduling arrangements just for these to make it fair and easy on everyone, and participation is mandatory.

You will log into and text on around 6 services on your block (depending on the time you work and how many moderators are working at that time). You must stay logged into each of these services the entire 3 hours.

While working the services, when you need more operators logged into one or more, you will change your display name on msn messenger, stating the services you need help on, and show yourself as offline, then back online again, 2 – 3 times.

Managers online can help you get cover if help does not come when needed. You can message one of them, and they will shout for help as well.

After your shift you will then write up a report, listing each of the services that was assigned to you to watch, and stating any details about the service. How busy was it? Did it get backed up? Was it slow? Were there any problems on the service? Were there any operator messages on the service that need reporting?

Anything at all of importance that went on during your block, you will state in your report. It is handy to keep a blank document on your desktop that you can quickly access during your block to keep any type of notes for your report.

On each block you work, we expect moderators to achieve at LEAST 200 texts. That means that in 3 hours texting on all services that you’re assigned those totals need to add up to at LEAST 200. Higher totals are definitely possible but 200 is our minimum. That’s only 67 texts needing done per hour.

Moderators are also required to do 5,000 texts per month. This includes all totals from your “blocks” plus any texting you do in your free time. 5,000 texts while working as a moderator is easy. If you do 40 blocks each month, and do 200 texts on each of those blocks, that is 8000 texts.

UK Scheduled hours run from 7am – 7pm UK time, split up into 3 hour blocks.

USA scheduled hours run from 7pm – 7am UK time. This is 2pm – 2am USA Eastern time. They are split up into 3 hour blocks.


We would like for a moderator to be able to work any of the block times for their country, though if there is one that works best, or one that doesn’t work very well, that’s fine. Just so long as the moderator is flexible enough to consistently alternate between a minimum of at least 2 block times during UK hours if they’re a UK moderator or during USA hours if they’re a USA moderator.

It isn't easy at all and it's even worse when you get conned like
I have which is why I want to know if I do have much of a chance to get the money I'm owed.

What do you make of the email saying she would only receive higher payment if a certain number of shift were completed? Part of the contract or not?

Perhaps the problem is with the geographical location of the organisation.

The first post said "begun working as self-employed" but then mentions the other position and refers to a contract of service for that role. In the UK, a contract of service is for an employed role. A contract for services would not be for an employee.

The confidentiality agreement states that as a mod I shall not disclose any information about the company even if I'm sacked and I'm not allowed to start my own company for a year after being sacked as a mod it also goes
On to state if I resign my logins shall be suspended and if I step down to an op my pay rate will change back to that of an op.
