Digital Camera Bargain - From High Street - Budget (£200)

Hello,

Loking for the above!! Going on holiday Monday and i want to buy a good digital camera at a bargain price. Willing to spend less than my £200price...would like to get a bargain good value for money camera, ideally one that i cant buy cheaper on the net. Might be difficult. Not a camera expert and as i need to but it tomorrow(in Glasgow), hoping you guys can help me out. Basically my only specs are that its a good alrounder as i plan on taking it on my many holidays a year.

Anyhelp here would be great as its short notice.

Ps. If theirs a great bargain on the net for a digi cam that can be delivered to my house on for Monday then i would consider that also as i do not leave untill the Monday night.

Thanks.

I'd have thought that was a better option for you, tbh.

Places like ebuyer will charge you around a tenner to get it delivered on monday...And I'd have thought that the price difference highstreet vs online on a £200 camera would be more than £10.

That said, Jessops are often pretty good at matching online prices, my gf got a really good deal from them (far better than anything online) by doing this. So they might be worth a look if there's one local.

What sort of specifications do you want in the camera?

I bought the Olympus mju 700 from jessops about 8 months ago, got them to price match it to £140 by taking an internet print-out - Amazon are still selling it for £225! I'm no expert but am v pleased with it. It takes good photos, looks really cute and fits in your pocket. One thing I would advise is buying a memory card on next day delivery - this will save you a lot - memory cards are extortionate from many high street retailers, including those at the airport. Choose your camera first though, as diff brands take diff types of card. Good luck!

Read up on Jessops here .... http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=3163515&postcount=1

But note that some branches of Jessops are being very difficult these days and denying the price match exists. Others are quite happy to help you out.

The instore catalogues used to have the price promise written in them so its worth a look in those if need be.

The online store needs to be a uk one (ideally with a UK phone number) and the item in stock for them to match.

Not sure which camera to recommend but I've been impressed by Canon ones in the past and disappointed with Kodak ones.
  • I was looking for one up to £200 last week - ended up settling on a Sony W55 from ebuyer which I picked up for £125. It's a present so it was not bought to my specifications but to my other half's - after I took her round a few shops for a look. In store it was around £160 or so (Currys). Great looking and seems to have reasonable reviews also very slim and would fit in pocket great. Sony have good lens on them (Carl Zeiss) too.
Had a lot more going for it but I thought biggest downside of buying Sony is the relatively high cost of their Memory Stick Pro Duo compared to for example SD memory cards.

You might have done this already but as well as asking here, the best investment you could make tomorrow would be £3 or £4 on a digital camera buyers guide at your newsagent.

Here is some stuff from the mag I got last week -
Digital Camera Issue number 58 had a battle of the bestsellers under £200

If buying for myself I would have bought their recommended one - based on the review and seeing it in the shops (handling is important as some are so compact you could find your fingers are too big for buttons or you can't get a comfortable grip).

Canon Powershot A710 1S - I think it might only be available in Jessops £199

They thought Sony Cybershot W35 (I bought W55) was a good all rounder and Pentax Optio L30 was good but they said at only £40 less than the Canon it didn't offer enough features - this camera however was available last week using a tenner off via google checkout online at £105 so if your total budget was £200 including memory eg £38 for Pro duo memory stick online plus paying a little extra for guaranteed delivery, it might be worth a look. It was £135 instore at Currys however compared to the £155 listed in the magazine.

You mentioned that you are going on holiday -somewhere sunny?
Worth bearing in mind that most compact digital cameras don't have a true optical viewfinder i.e. something to look through if it is too sunny to see what is on your LCD screen on the back of the camera. The canon and sony cameras I mentioned have this.

I think you should buy the mag and read the reviews - you will also get a chance to check out the other cameras they have liked in previous reviews and there is really just too much information on the cameras for me to type - shame I can't comment on the use of any of these as I haven't used them yet but others should be able to help there.

I think you might have to buy from the shops rather than online as most stores will do a guaranteed next working day delivery but you would normally have to get your order in before a specified time on a working day and it's now Friday evening.

click on the links below for a look at some of the cameras I mentioned

    http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/126605 is the Sony W35

http://www.jessops.com/Store/s48731/0/Digital-Compact-Cameras/Pentax/Optio-L30-Digital-Camera-/details.aspx?refer=SSP is the Pentax optio L30 and the price is again slightly cheaper than the magazine suggested - it can be reserved instore - that price is a web exclusive.

    http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_Camera/PowerShot/PowerShot_A710_IS/index.asp

and click here for it at Jessops

According to Jessops website it can be collected normally within an hour.

Yes, try to get one with a view finder as well as display screen. View finders are really useful when on holiday somewhere that the sun is very bright as the screen is then difficult to see
