I've just cooked a batch of dried white beans and a batch of dried chickpeas. Can I use the cooking liquid for anything as I do with water I've cooked vegetables or potatoes in (usually use it as a soup base). really hate wasting anything that can be used up

I use the cooking water from chickpeas by adding some to home made hummus, not too much but just enough to make it spreadable (I came from a certain country in the middle east where hummus is bordering religion and no one trow away the cooking water).
Chickpeas cooking water will also upgrade any soup, I freeze the water and add to carrot and coriander soup when I make a batch. Works a bit like stock but healthier I suppose. don'o about beans water.Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

I use it for soup but just yesterday I read it is good to use to make bread, too. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0

Thank you both. I ended up making a sausage, white bean and chickpea casserole -took a leap in the dark and used the cooking water from both to make the gravy with and it was delicious. I make my own bread so am interested to find I can use the rest of it up in tomorrows loaf. Thanks againPeople Say that life's the thing - but I prefer reading

Not sure its a good idea to keep the water unless you don't mind being bloated

If you boil chickpeas for hummus, add a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to the water, it will make the chickpeas softer much quicker (less boiling) and will also make sure that if you do use the water there will be no winds in the pipe.Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!
