Exchange rates on a cruise ship

After working until nearly 80, got a few thousand redundancy payment. Treating myself to a longed for cruise, found one with a singles rate of only £99.00 and booked it.
An American ship-think it could turn out very expensive. Only have a debit card and this has been registered for the many onboard expenses
So- Do I let the ship convert my charges from dollars to GBP or
do I ask to be charged in dollars for everything and have my bank do the conversion. (TSB)??
Feel it could be expensive to make the wrong choice.

You can also purchase dollars before the trip and have them applied to your onboard account at the pursers desk. I'm not so sure about preloaded cards, some lines maybe funny about taking them. Normally you can check your onboard account using the TV in your room, or by enquiring in person, worth keeping an eye on it.0
