missing endowment

Hi, I took out an endowment policy in 1988 for the lump sum of my house, after about 5 years the payments stopped without my noticing for some unknown reason. About 2 years after that I was informed and had to take out another one to cover my mortgage (that finished this month). In total I paid about £3000 into the first one it was with London and Manchester who are now Friends life. I still have a copy of my endowment and my policy number, is there any way that I can claim this back?
