This comment made me actually chuckle out loud and my husband (who is on the phone) gave me a right weird look... When talking about his 92 year old Nan who is losing her marbles I think he thought I was being a right b!tch! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Where I live supplies run out pretty quickly when there is bad weather - so yes I do keep in a good stock of the 'staples'.
I just complain I don't have enough cupboards! cos every week its a challenge trying to fit the shop in!0 -
I too have an amazing supply of stock in my cupboards and freezer.I too blame it on Mum and a rationing mentality left over from the late 1940s.Now and again I make a point of only buying milk, and fruit and veg for a fortnight to try and run the cupboards down a bit I will do that this month as I need some room for a Christmas stock up and the possibility of a cold snap in Jan/Feb when I can't get out in case I fall over as I use a stick to walk with.So this month shopping will be quite low on the things I need to do for a couple of weeks
:):) great for the budget though

Ive got quite a lot of food stored away, blame my spending on approved foods, but Ive not shopped there in months and Im trying to use up whats there.
Ive got so much red and green thai curry paste its unreal, I reckon Ive got enough for another 50 curries at least.
Loads of rice, pasta as well. But it will be used. And the curries are great for using up leftover veg, just as well I live on my own as if I did live with someone they'd be complaining about having curry every other night.0 -
I like a full freezer and cupboards . Im a bargain hunter so when meat is reduced I buy as much as I can. I did have ten chickens the other week in the cheat freezer.
If you have stuff you know you wont use why not give it to a food bank.0 -
If you possibly can, it's often better to keep your store cupboard items separately from your everyday shopping. We've put up shelves at the back of the garage to take our stores.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I should probably step out of this thread seeing as I want to keep the bare minimium.. (still around 80 or so separate foods)..0 -
I think a a sort out and inventories of cupboards and freezer is your next step. It's quite therapeutic and you'll be so pleased with yourself when it's done.:)
I have a paper list of what's in my freezers stuck on the microwave. I have an overflow storecupboard upstairs. So I always write my meal plan from my freezer list, basing it on the meat and HM ready meals that I already have. Then I check the kitchen cupboards to make sure I have other basic ingredients (tomatoes, red beans, pasta, rice or whatever) if it's not in the kitchen then I check the storecupboard. Only if we've really run out do I add it to the shopping list. So if I'd run out of baked beans I'd buy the minimum for recipes that week unless I saw them on offer then I'd stock up. Otherwise they get carried over on future lists until an offer shows.
Most weeks I only need bread, milk, eggs and fresh fruit & veg as essentials then I buy a bit of extra for the cupboards/freezer if it's a bargain. And while you're attacking the stockpiles, be creative. If you want to use up frozen or canned veg, consider that first for recipes before buying fresh.0
