Are you actually sure it was another months car insurance. All insurances charge a cancellation fee and some also charge an admin fee. You have not mentioned this at all.

You really need to read the terms and conditions you signed and agreed to.

In fairness, I don't think it is all their fault,

    Forget what people 'said'

As far as I know there is always a cancellation fee.
£50 is deemed fair but it could be more, like I say, there could also be a cancellation fee. The debt collectors would possibly not know that it was a cancellation fee, hence not mentioning it.

It will be in your terms and conditions. You really need to read them.

well it doesn't seem like I have a choice but pay does it. Either I made a mistake and owe for cancellation fee, or I'm right about it being an extra month and they have forced money from me by pushing the disputed amount to collection agency where I have no choice but to pay and can't fight back.

Well, despite the fact I can easily pay the sum in question, I will not make it easy for this D.C.A.
I will contact them to arrange a payment plan and pretend I can only afford 50p a week. I will not disclose my address to them as I shall soon be moving back to the address where they can't find me. I will record the phone call as evidence I have done my best and hopefully catch them refusing to accept payment.
This will leave them waiting for 65 month's to get there money. Even longer no doubt after all the occasional month's where I'm "super hard-up" and can only afford £1 that month.
No doubt they will send me a final settlement at much reduced amount, to which I will offer half that amount.

Any body got any idea what exact percentage a debt collector agency buys the original debt for?
Basically, forget the fact it has been passed to a DCA, nothing has changed your rights. The first thing to do is to write and ask for a full explanation of why the debt is alleged. I am tempted to suggest the 'prove it' template, but I think it is a little too confrontational for this situation.

My feeling is that Swintons only cancelled the health insurance off your original letter and you are being charged for an extra month based on taking cancellation based on your phone call when they tried charging again.

What is on your side is that you wrote a letter which they cannot deny receiving because they cancelled the health insurance. I think you need to stop being mad and become cunning - draw them out with explanations which lead them to a position where they cannot deny that you cancelled.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'
