Advertising services/finding jobs?

Ok I have two questions:
I need to make a bit of extra money, I'm a single parent and not working currently but am gathering the pre-requisites to get into teaching (maths d to c) whilst getting experience in a school. I have a degree and also a 2 year old toddler.
1. are there any things I can do, either voluntary or paid, with a toddler in tow? I have to pay my sister £15 to look after him a day so anything where I can miss that and take him along would be good, I was thinking paper round, etc.?
2. I was thinking of putting an ad offering services as babysitter/tutor/dog walker in newsagents/post office. my nan's area is an elderly area and most use the PO at the centre of the community. my question is, can I print out of a few of my own flyers done on my laptop and ask to put in window, or do you need to pay? would I advertise these altogether or separately? has anyone tried this with success? I haven't seen any recently, but frequently use netmums where lots of people are looking for babysitters, myself included at one point, with no success as there are only child-minders!
thank you
