I've just downloaded endomondo to my phone, haven't used it yet but my husband has and he thinks it's good. Uses the GPS on your phone to track how far/how fast you go, will also plot it on google maps.

    Here's a link to it.

    http://www.endomondo.com/login

It will sync with Facebook as well and post your workouts on there (but only if you want it to ;) )

I use strava.com. Its the popular app among the cycling fraternity.

I dont know about other apps, but i like the fact i can follow/have followers and that you can see how you rank against anyone, who has travelled along a stage of your route (just hope you dont live near wiggo and cavendish training routes lol)

I use runkeeper. Can use for any activity, it can link in in with your music playlists, shows maps of where you've been, gives you split times / distances / countdowns. Is amazing ! I love it. And can Facebook etc share

Strava is pretty much the app everyone seems to use in my experience.

As a cyclist I hate it though because idiots just use it to try and 'beat' the time set on certain routes by cycling recklessly.

How can you know they are biking recklessly?

ONe way to 'beat' times, is to ride that section of a route just after your warm-up. Someone hitting a section at 50miles into their route, will most likely be going slower than someone who does it 5miles into their ride

Endemondo uses GPS. Don't know about Data, although it will use a very small amount to sync with the web site and Facebook.

    Edit-

Just found this. Hope that helps.

Because i've seen strava times for sections near where I live and the simple fact is that if people really are doing the speeds that strava says they're doing on those sections then there is no doubt they are cycling dangerously.

For instance there is one section in Lea Valley which is on a shared use path which is narrow, winding, enclosed by trees either side, has several cross roads with other footpaths, has a poorly lit underpass under the North Circular and is a very popular route with hikers and dog walkers.

The strava speeds on this section are in excess of 25MPH and when I cycle there you can see cyclists haring down their, forcing people off the path and then stopping at the end of the strava section to check their times.

Do these apps work when the phone is on sleep? I tried a pedometer app but it didn't.
Endomondo help page suggests it may not easily find your GPS location without data being enabled, so have a test first?
