I'd recommend getting down to your local wool shop or John Lewis and having a good grope of some balls (of wool! ;) ).

    Yarn suitable for this jumper:

I don't seem to be able to order the recommended one, so I'm looking for something similar online. Being a novice, it's rather confusing! I know about tension and ply, but can't work out how well other yarns will knit up by comparison, no indication is given as to what measurement the number of rows/stitches are over (iykwim) on the yarn websites I've looked at.

    Any chunky should do.

If you have time, I would suggest going round the charity shops and seeing what really cheap chunky they have with the bands still on. Knit a square to check the tension, then go along to local knit shop and order that brand (if it is okay of course!) See if you can get a selection and suck it and see.

You could invest in a knitting magazine (or see if they have it in the library). Simply Knitting and Knitting Today are both English magazines and they are full of stockists and advertisers. Vogue have American suppliers and terms and are very confusing. If you are quick and get this month's copy of Simply Knitting there is a cricket sweater for a man in there.

Usually the ball band on the ball of wool gives the tension. It's generally a little picture of a small grid, with the tension measurements written beside it, or a picture of a pair of knitting needles, again sayin the tension. Sometimes, it just says with no picture. Readicut wools very often have pot luck bargains. They do have a chunky wool offer at the moment. The onlu thing is, you don't get a colour choice. They send you what they have. Generally though the colours are pretty good, and so is the quality. I think as well, if you google discount yarns, some sites will come up. I think there is one called Dianas wools, or something like that. Also, McA Direct. has discount wool. Hope I've helped a little.
