catalogue taken out in my name

I got a letter through the post saying that i owed £156 to a catalogue taken out in my name. When i asked when the catalogue was taken out the company said 1997. I was 12 years old at the time but the company wont listen. Stuck at what to do next

Laugh....then tell them to jog on.

They cant enforce it because a) it's statute barred and b) you were 12 at the time or c) it's clearly identity theft.

Either that, or ignore it. They can rant all they like, but you dont have to do anything. If they start getting obnoxious, send them a letter telling them you are now considering this as harassment.

Not a con - perfectly legal. You can *ask* them to pay up and most people dont know the rules or their rights, so they pay. It's what they rely on. The company just cannot *enforce* the debt in court, which is a whole different ball game. The person is completely at liberty to 'decline' their invitation. In this case, not only is it statute barred, the person was 12, therefore too young to enter into a credit agreement - it couldnt be enforced anyway.
