What you'd wish you'd known as an MSE newbie?

Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster!

I'm starting my journey to being debt free and have next September as my goal in mind.

I'm interested in any pearls of wisdom you might have for a newbie, that you wish you'd have known when you first came to MSE; tips for making the most of the forum, key points of etiquette, little gems of advice for a new poster?

Thanks in advance! Look forward to getting to 'know' you all

  • Hi HopefulMama

We have the same goal; our 30th birthdays :bdaycake:
My birthday is a month after yours so it will be interesting to see how we get on.

I'm new too but have been lurking for a very long time. The best piece of advice I've seen is no matter how small the payment, it all counts. I once paid 14p to my mortgage account.

Well done for starting and welcome!
    Mortgage - £78,982.40 4/10/13
    Barclaycard - £1200 - 4/10/13
    Virgin CC - £1315 - 4/10/13

    Bank of Scotland CC - £1817 - 4/10/13

I want to be mortgage free by the time I'm 40, 11 years to go

    Welcome to the forum!

Good tips - Old Style boards are great for making your household budget stretch and shrink, the debt free wannabe board is good for moral support and tips about where you can cut back. Food Shopping and Groceries boards are also good for deals and offers.

Be aware that there are trolls about, who might say mean things, and there are those who say truthful/helpful things but not always tactfully - you'll figure out who means well, and that's most of us!

More than anything, remember that tips on here are for you to use as you will. Opinions are like bums, everyone has one. It doesn't mean they all need to be carefully looked at :)

Good luck, and take care x

That would be my top tip too.:D

Not only do you find out lots of interesting stuff but you may be able to offer help and advice and so return the help people will give you here.

And you can even have a good laugh and relax in the Arms.

And, if someone says something you don't like, don't jump down their throat.

    Think.

Accepting advice/opinions you didn't want to hear is something quite a few people struggle with.
