Qualifications to be a dentist

Advising a school leaver who did well with results, most A's, and he is thinking about going for Dentistry after Uni.

What are the quickest ways and min qualifications to be a qualified dentist?

I wonder what is the youngest age someone could be a fully qualified dentist?

I'll leave these here since your Google is broken:

If you're too lazy to click - it's a 5 year degree course. Minimum qualifications? Lots of A's at A Level and an approved degree in Dentistry. The 'course' composes of graduate education, post-graduate education and 'continuous education'

It's not a job you get into 'quickly

    Have a look here: http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/explore-by-career/dental-team/entry-requirements/

It would appear to take a few years! Is he doing dentistry at Uni as it looks like you need to get a degree from an approved Dental School.

Were they no careers advisers at school to have spoken to?

What course is being studied at Uni? Have the university said this is a good course to be on for aspiring dentists?

My daughters boyfriend has been studying towards dentisty for 4 years and, he has to fight to get onto courses and he has had times found it very frustrating. There seems to be lots of intense competition for dentistry schools. My daughter is a qualified dental nurse and trained and sat her exams in 12 months, she is now working towards going to uni to do a diploma in dental hygiene, looks like she maybe finished with that as well before he qualifies.

When you finally get your dental qualifications, is that known as a "fill" good situation.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    Good one:)
  • I agree that the competition for places in dental schools is very fierce: I know someone who got in and qualified a few years ago, so know what she went through.

Just meeting the 'A' level requirements is not enough. You need to prove that you have always been interested in and good with working with your hands just for starters. Unless you want to do research you need to be a 'people person'.

  • There is no fast track through dental school. Most want three As or two As and a B in relevant subjects.

    Here is some useful information:

"There isn't an overall easier dental school to get into. It depends on the institution as some place emphasis on the UKCAT score, others have high GCSE requirements, some ask for AAA, or AAB with AA in chem and bio and a few that allow AAB in any order. You will have to do some research yourself, have a look on the university webpages.

    UCAS - Dentistry search:

AdmissionsForum: great forum for medical/dental applicants:

    Entrance Tests:
    UKCAT – http://www.ukcat.ac.uk/home/

University of Belfast – no test, AAA
University of Birmingham – no test, AAB, AA in chem and bio
University of Bristol - no test, AAB, AA in chem and bio
University of Cardiff - UKCAT, AAB
University of Dundee - UKCAT, AAA (i think they want 3 sciences)
University of Glasgow – UKCAT + portfolio, AAB
University of Leeds – no test, AAB with AA in chem and bio
University of Liverpool – no test, AAB with AA in chem and bio
University of Guy’s, King’s, St Thomas’ - UKCAT, AAB
Queen Mary University of London - UKCAT, AAB
University of Manchester - UKCAT, AAB with AA in chem and bio
University of Newcastle - UKCAT, AAB
University of Sheffield - UKCAT, AAB with AA in chem and bio"
