Biggest Threats to Cyclists?
Comments
-
Biggest threat to cyclists is themselves, I continually see a few early mornings with no lights, hi viz and they expect other drivers to see them on the road.
Altura night vision jacket
seatpost reflector
mudguard reflector
reflective trim on shoes, leggings, helmet & pearlescent white bike
Cateye rear light on solid, smart rear light on flashing
Magic shine front light on solid,Revolution front light on flash
Straight road with clear line of sight
myself and a taxi the only thing on it given its 3am in winter
The result
So how did my high viz & lights not stop that 'threat'?0 -

How selfish; expecting drivers to look where they're going and concentrate when operating dangerous, fast-moving, heavy machinery...It's only numbers.0 -
Biggest threat to cyclists is the fact that they are marginalised by our unbelievably anti-cycling infrastructure.
Cycling is healthy, reduces congestion and doesn't pollute. Countries like Holland and Denmark have shown what can be done so why are we not following their lead? We need to move with the times and embrace cycling as a form of transport for everyone not just enthusiasts.0 -
Biggest threat to this cyclist tonight was himself!
Trying to get too tightly around a corner without slowing down enough, on Gatorskin Ultra tyres in the wet!
Thankfully no one else was involved and I was able to walk away from it...0 -

I do, too. Mornings and evenings.
Without hi-viz gear or reflective strips. In pouring rain. Black clothing. Plugged in to I-Pods or whatever.
I assume that they can see within their own "stopping distance", but often all I see is a flash of movement - especially as they come up the side of the car to pull in front.
I'm not saying there are not some poor, aggressive or inconsiderate motorists but it's not a case of 4 wheels bad, two wheels good.Aiming to get healthy in 2014.0 -
In summary the roads are populated by muppets using all forms of transport to get from a to b.
I've just completed my ERD (emergency response driver) course with the Fire Brigade and I made the observation to my instructor than so many folks had attended the 'Kermit school of motoring'. His reply 'yes but don't let them induce a Miss Piggy response.' :rotfl:0 -
Lights are a must and there's a case to have them on in daylight like Volvos. Helmets... not much good protecting your head if you don't use your head in the first place. As a cyclist and a driver, MY own observation over 50 years, and it's merely my opinion, is that the worst cyclist behaviour is from those fully kitted up with all the gear riding unnecessarily expensive status/statement bikes. Show me a cyclist without special clothing or helmet, and it'll probably be an older rider who came through the old style proficiency test system and who knows the best protection a rider can have is to be savvy and aware. And NOT rely on idiot drivers to do the right thing.0

Given this weeks events, I'd say Bus's and Lorries are the biggest threat.....

Or cyclists undertaking left turning vehicles, but I am sure it will all come out in the wash.0
