limited kitchen

Hi.
I'm in the process of major works being done to my home.
I finally have a kitchen, water, gas and electric -yay.
I want to make a proper meal this eve, only problem is all my cooking things are in storage and can't be accessed til Sunday.
I have a knife, a large ceramic oven dish, a fish slice, a wooden spoon, cutlery, 4 plates, a microwave, gas rings and oven with grill and grill tray.
I don't know what I can make was thinking slicing layers of meat veg n potato and baking but don't know if it will work.... I so have a kettle and 4 mugs.

I can go shopping for any food.
Worst case I can buy one cheap kitchen item but seems a waste for a couple of days
Trying to make the money last the month.

    :) Hmmm, that's a knotty one.

If you looked at slicing spuds, you'd have to do it very thinly to get them to cook but it's entirely possibly.

One great recipe from my late auntie was to slice potatoes very thinly and layer them in an oven dish with grated cheese (improvise with shaving cheese block with knife or potato peeler or buy pre-grated) and adding black pepper to each layer. Top layer is cheese. Fill pan to half it's depth with milk and bake on a moderate oven for 2-3 hours (test with a fork to see if spuds are softened). It's lush, serve with a bagged salad, perhaps?

Would a lasagne be do-able? Perhaps with canned mince as I can't see anything you could brown the mince off in. Or a shepherds pie, ditto, could even top off with instant mash.

You could roast potatoes (and other veggies) in your oven dish, serve with sliced roast beef from the deli counter, park it in the oven for a couple of minutes to take the chill off and serve with gravy (made in a mug with boiling water).

Just a few quick thoughts. HTH.

And you can always add ham to the above potato and cheese recipe - my mother used to cook this when she was getting to the end of the month and times were tough. (Ham was only added when she felt really flush.)
    Better is good enough.

Some bacon grilled 'til it's crispy would go well with the above.
  • What about Scottish Stovies? http://www.stovies.com/ There are many one pot dishes that can be done in the casserole dish doesn't need to be stew.

instead of par-boiling the potato or trying to cut really thin slivers, you could start them cooking in the microwave before slicing.

I reckon you could do something like the hairy bikers' spanish chicken with that lot http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/653540
