Handing in notice as I have a new job offer, do I tell them my last date of work?

Or do I get them to tell me? Only I want to know ASAP as I need to tell my new employer, if I hand in my notice tomorrow which is 3rd of October do I say my last day is 3rd of novemver? Or shall I not mention anything?

You give the company notice and they tell you when your last day of employment will be.

If you hand in your notice on 3 October and you are required to give one month's notice, include a sentence to say that your last day of employment with them will be 3 November. That avoids doubt.

They cannot require you to stay longer. If they want you to leave earlier, they will let you know - but you would have to be paid for your full notice period. That is unless they have to give you shorter notice and you joined them after 5 April 2012.

Of course, if your contract requires you to give less (or more) than one month's notice, follow whatever it says.

No. You consult your contract and then hand in your notice given the Employer your contractual notice. You state, 'One month notice taking effect X, last day of employment being Y, ciao'.

Tell your new employer you have Z notice period and you are available Y+1

If your job offer is conditional, eg subject to satisfactory references, it is usual to wait for an unconditional offer before giving notice.

If your new employer is unable to get satisfactory references, they can withdraw the offer.

If you give notice and subsequently want to change your mind. Your employer may not let you rescind your notice.

Your contact lays down a minimum notice period. Your employer may let you go sooner, and you may give more notice than you are contractually required to give.

If you do give notice on 3/10, you can specify a last day of service of Sunday 3/11. If you work a Monday/Friday week (and you are salaried), your current employer should pay you up to and including the Sunday.
