Are my GHD's dying?

I straightened my hair for the first time in months this weekend and noticed that my hair smelled funny afterwards. The kind of smell you get when your hairdryer overheats IYKWIM.

I've not noticed this before, and I didn't do it any differently than normal. Has anyone else had this happen? Is this a sign the GHD's are on their way out?

If you haven't used them for a long time, it might be the old build up of dust & product burning off, sort of like dust in a toaster. Or since you haven't used them on your hair in ages, you've forgotten what it smells like! Also, if your hair is dryer than usual, or you've changed shampoo/conditioner, or you've left some other product on like hairspray, this can all affect the smell. Was it only your hair that smelt, or did the GHDs smell when you turned them on?

My two GHD pairs that gave out on me were down to a loose connection within the wiring, and would intermittently turn off if the wire wasn't held in a certain position.

I think it was only my hair that smelt, so perhaps it was the products I used.

I used Kerastase Nutritive Bain Nutri Thermique. I wonder if it's that that made my hair stink??

I've used the Kerastase BNT and its fantastic, doesn't make my hair smell bad when being used with GHDs- in fact the whole reason that product was created was to use with hair straighteners so it shouldn't smell bad. If your sure its the product check the source of the product is genuine as it shouldn't smell bad at all.

I would echo Fluff15's suggestion that it could be product and dust left on the straightener from before- you may not notice it but unless you rinse it all off and leave your hair looking like a haystack, a little conditioner will always stay in your hair after washing it, its designed to work like this so it would be odd if a little product didn't end up gathering on the GHD plates and then dust gathering too...it all adds up to just being old stuff burning off. It can also gather beneath the plates too don't forget- you can't see this as the plates are fitted to not be take out but there is a gap below the plates before the plastic casing and dust can easily fall here.

If the plates don't heat up, then you need to worry but any burning smell, check the plug, if it isn't the plug and your able to straighten your hair as normal then I doubt it is the straighteners as they'd have fused and cut out by now.
