Need to touch oyster on route validator

My regular route to work is between Walthamstow and Euston and I often get London overground to Blackhorse rd and change onto the Victoria line. My oyster is a gold card for zones 1-3. On my return today I was stopped at the interchange with London Overground and told that I had to use the route validator. I said no and showed him that my card was not pay as you go. He still said that I had to . I disputed it and walked on. He didn't stop me.
I have found 1 occasion when it is useful to use the validator but it only applies if I need to prove that i have stayed within my zones when crossing London on the overground system.
Has anyone else had this ?

You might get a more informed answer if you were to pose your question on http://www.oyster-rail.org.uk/.
Particularly, on their Route Validators (Pink Readers) page.0 -

Yes I do know about this and have put a comment there. I definitely don't need to touch on the validator but just wondered whether others had been told to do so .0 -

A pink reader can reduce the cost of certain journeys. Where this applies, it will be mentioned in the 'Show other fares' option (where applicable) on the Oyster Single Fare finder.*
So I can understand someone recommending you tap it as it may reduce your fare (though not in this case, of course) but to insist that you tap it is utterly bizarre.
It does not surprise me though as in London the poor behaviour, attitude and lack of knowledge of some revenue and gateline staff is, to put it diplomatically, a cause of some concern. You might get a more informed answer if you were to pose your question on ....
(* I believe I am permitted to link to the TfL website, as although I am friends with people who work for LU/TfL, they are not involved with the website)0 -
That is odd. Was this an LU or LO employee or contractor?

Yes, good site that! Good job you linked to it, as I am not permitted to.

I don't know whether he was from LU or LO. I have since mentioned it to LO staff at my local station but he was also puzzled. Have had a reply from the other site. He also didn't know why it would be a requirement0
