Help please?

Hello,

Im new to this so please excuse if im posting in the wrong place. But basically im after some help. I have been having some financial difficulty and set up a payment plan with the catalogue littlewoods. Payment was agreed and I recieved a letter to confirm the arrangement. I even set up a direct debit so I dont miss a payment. I woke up this morning and littlewoods had taken £7200 out of my bank via direct debit. It knocked me sick!
I called littlewoods straight away and they apologies for their error but could not recall the money they said I had to contact my bank myself.
I called my bank and after 5 and a half hours managed to get the bank to recall the money but this will take a few days. I called littlewoods again to explain what happened and I felt like I was fobed off.
The impact this has had due to one persons mistake is awful. I dont know what to do, littlewoods are giving me charges cause the payment is going down as not recieved, my bank will give me charges as 8 direct debits failed due to this mess. I cant even get cash out for petrol to get to work I need electric and gas at home.im now sat in darkness cause I cant get any money out! I dont have anyone to turn to to help or lend money from. The distress of this is awful. What can I do... littlewoods has fobed me off no support from them all I got was were sorry about the mistake but theres nothing we can do about it!

Please if anyone has any advice or can point me in the right direction?

Thank you

    Hi
I don't know a great deal about banking issues, but I do know that if it is a direct debit you are covered by the direct debit guarantee as follows :-

    Direct Debit Guarantee

The Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits

If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by the organisation or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society
If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when the organisation asks you to
You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required.

So you all entitled to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE REFUND as stated in the direct debit guarantee.

If it was any other type of payment like a continuous payment authority where you have give. Instructions for it to come from your debit card, I don't know where you stand with that.

But I certainly know the direct debit guarantee and have used this myself in the past when an incorrect amount was taken from my account by SSE.
I don't see why you should have to pay fees for failed DDs either due to the mistake.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along shortly.
But the do have to give you an IMMEDIATE REFUND.
Just google :- THE DIRECT DEBIT GURANTEE.

You are fuel a full and immediate refund as said.

Go to your bank and don't leave til it's been refunded.

You should not gave to pay any charges for this. Clarify with your bank also once you gave your cash back.

It is the banks responsibility to fix this but they might try and wriggle out of it.

    Do you actually owe £7,000?

When did you make the reduced payment arrangement?

How many payments have been made?

Have you missed any payments or been late (even by one day)?

Are you sure it was littlewoods who took the money?

Whilst I agree with the above, banks are normally quite good at this, they return money pretty instantly. Seems like there is more to this than at first glance

Sounds to me like it could be a keying error by whoever set up the DD - were you due to pay £72.00 by any chance?

I'm finding this rather stretches credulity, to be frank. Your finances are bad enough that you needed to set up a payment plan with Littlewoods and yet either your bank allowed a direct debit of 7K which sent you way over any agreed overdraft limit, or you had at least a few thousand just sitting in the bank. Unless it was just after payday and you are on a very nice salary (in which case why are you in such a mess?) this just doesn't seem possible to me.
In case this really is a genuine post, you need to get onto the bank and demand they deal with it under the direct debit guarantee!

Hopefully you have been back in touch with the bank and they have repaid the money in to you under the DD guarantee.

In terms of the charges - you mention littlewoods are charging you - they will presumably reverse these charges once they have sorted out their error.

In terms of any other charges that the bank add on to your account, initially I would speak to the bank to see if they will remove the charges, but ultimately if they don't then you will need to write to littlewoods with evidence of the charges and interest you have incurred as a result of their mistake and request a refund from them.

    What does this mean, please?

I think its meant to say due rather than fuel. Probably an incorrect 'autocorrect'.
