Thank you all very much for your help and advice0

If you do feel browbeaten to meet the EA adviser, then waste their time by insisting they come to you. I am sure they will "skip" this opportunity, or if they do attend, at least you can do something usual, like watching TV, until they have finished their prepared speech, then decline their offer and request they leave.
Either way you have met the EA's remit to vendor.0 -

They can't hide behind that excuse - the EA should tell the vendor that they would be acting illegally if they submitted to the request - compliance with the law takes precedence over 'client requests'."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -

They are clearly lying.
Their vendor does not care where you get your mortgage.
I would go round to the vendor and tell them you are being prevented from buying because the agent is set on earning a few pounds from financial services commissions.I am a Mortgage Broker

Despite this is probably naive, I have to ask.....when this happens, why do people not go straight to the vendor and clarify the situation to see whether the EA is lying?Herman - MP for all!

The vendor doesn't live at the address, she bought the house as a buy to let, the house is vacant, I have no way of getting hold of her, otherwise I'd be there now

I called them back to discuss the 'whys' of me going to see them and managed to whittle it down to a phone call to talk about finances. If I had/do go through with this, it would be for less fuss. I can sit and nod and then say no, sorry, I'm with First Direct or I can fight and complain. Sometimes, it's easier to nod, especially when the EA is your only link to vendor. I could arrange another viewing (fourth) and organise it at such a time that it could only be done by the vendor, but I'm wary of getting on peoples nerves!
As it stands, they're actually talking about the offer now and it looks like we're in negotiations which is terrifying.0 -
I had this on the flat I bought recently. Estate Agents were Bairstow Eves for the record who told me they had to financially qualify me before my offer would be accepted. I knew exactly what they were up to.
I went along with it as I live 5 minutes walk from the office and didn’t want the weasel EAs screwing things up. I knew they’d try to sell me some garbage (insurance, finance, conveyancing etc.). So I turned up at the office with my mortgage offer (key numbers blacked out). From the off I was aggressive but not rude towards their mortgage adviser/salesman, my opening line was “will this take long as this is all just a waste of my time”. At which point he backed off, told me everything looked OK and couldn’t wait to get me out the office so he could latch on to some easier prey. Offer was accepted a few days later, I never dealt directly with the EAs again and moved in less than 2 months later.
So my advice is go along, answer their questions and show them what they need to see but make sure they know you’re not happy about it. Be clear that they won't sell you anything and treat these leeches with the contempt they deserve. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Well we just had an offer accepted without seeing anyone, so all's well that starts fairly horrendously? Thank you all for giving me the nerve to challenge it0
