statute barred AMEX

This morning i have recieved a county court summons from amex regarding a credit card i had about 7 yrs ago. they are suing for a tenth of the outstanding balance. but reserve the right to claim the rest.is this a rouse to get me to resopnd to them so the statute of limitations restarts. i have never responded to their letters etc in over 6 yrs.the actual amount i owe is abot £700 the rest is charges. can i just respond to the summons stating that the debt is statute barred. or do i have to do something else.
p.s. I know i should pay the debt but i have just bought a house and am fostering our neice at the moment so things are very tight

thanks in advance matt
