Do You Open Every Email?

Options
I tend to scan my emails by just reading the title rather than opening the email and reading the body.

I've read recently a few compers spotting WEMs in their spam folders, which got me thinking about this. I was wondering whether those emails actually said Congratulations or similar in the title.

Do you open and read every email or do you scan and make an assumption based on the title?

I don't open every email. I have a filter set up, so that any that say "winner" or "congratulations" in the subject go into a specific folder. Then, before I delete them, I do another search for "congratulations" in the text of the email, then finally, I have a quick glance down the list and open any that I think are possible winners. Who knows if I have missed any though.

 I would never have time to open all my emails! Wouldn't know if I have missed any though. I think you can usually tell the ones that are newsletters etc.

I only scan them too. Then search congratulations before deleting them. Then do the same for my spam. Found one winning email in there :)

I've just discovered the "search" function on my email doh! This is now set to become a new obsession grrrrrr!

Mind you I have just searched "All Mail" for "Winner or Congratulations" in the last year and it looks like I haven't missed any phew!

  • I also have filters set up. I also have one set up for newsletters. So anything with Newsletter goes in another folder. I try to skim through the titles before deleting though-just in case!

Yep you can set up gmail to filter on set words as I have it set up :)

I just scan email titles (on gmail you can get it to show a bit of the body of the text in the title screen too). I've nearly missed two WEM's that looked like spam though (one worded it to sound like it was a comp to enter and the other looked like a spam title!) - but most usually say congratulations in the title apart from that.

I'd never have time to read them all - if I'm out for a day I get overwhelmed with junk emails..

I'm going to have to do a bit of investing on setting up filters as I guess this is something different to just using the search function. I like the sound of filtering into a different folder :)

    Thanks guys for your advice

  • I do open every e-mail as I've had winning e-mails before that haven't been obvious in the title and don't want to miss out! I don't spend a lot of time reading each one- I just open, give it a quick glance and then delete.

There is a 'cog wheel' type of icon on the right hand top side - click and it has a drop down box. Select settings then there is a list of options on the next screen at the top, select filters and takes you into the set up for filtering email, on the second screen for that option you can select it to be ie starred, marked as important, moved to another folder (apply label if you have set up a folder marked comps for eg).
