Egg Money card - How do you use yours?

Hi all,

I recently applied for and got an Egg Money card. I haven't actually got my grubby little fingers on it yet, but I was going to replace my current cashback credit card with it as it pays double the cashback.

The only thing is, I've decided I can't be bothered with credit cards any more. They're just too much hassle and tempt you to spend more than you should, fooling you that your bank balance is better than it is etc. etc.

So, I've decided to stop spending on credit cards, even though I pay the balance off in full. I know the cashback is useful but I can't be bothered for 1% versus the hassle. I'm sticking to debit cards from now on.

But, I'm loathe to give up my 1% cashback!

How do people use their Egg Money cards? I notice you can front load them and get 4% interest while waiting for it to be spent, then you get 1% cashback on purchases. This is pretty good but I'm just wondering how people use it.

The maxim: the simpler the better comes to mind, and what's simpler than just using a debit card or cash from one bank account so that you can see exactly how much you have left?

  • Right now I'm using it as a standard purchases credit card that I've set up a direct debitfor to pay it off in full each month.

Once I've built up the balance on my A&L current account to the maximum they pay the 6.5% interest on though I'm going to change the direct debit to front load it & use it more like a debit card.

The advantage of doing that is that credit cards give you more protection than a debit card as well as the cashback.
