do you recommend a specific one? The gym guy did mention shakes, but when I looked in the shops I really didn't know what I was looking at! I tried a protein bar once, but it just seemed to stop me going to the toilet for a couple of days

I suspect that you get your energy from carbs then and that likely means that extended bouts of exercise will be counter productive as it will just make you hungry and therefore likely to eat more. We humans are very good at packing on fat because it is a survival mechanism. Part of that system is to burn fat as fuel, not carbs/sugar. Burning fat means that one does not get so hungry so quickly. I can miss out a meal or two without any discomfort but I eat meat which has far more calories than vegetables but stops hunger pangs better. As to exercise, short high intensity strength training workouts to build lean muscle is the best way to go as it doesn't take much time and muscle uses more calories to keep up than fat.
