I thought a will became invalid on marriage?

But in any case, it is possible just to do a completely new will, the last validly signed, dated and witnessed one is the one which stands, and part of the wording is that you revoke all previous wills. Drawing up a new will is generally considered 'safer' than doing a codicil: it can get very messy!

You are absolutely correct, a will does become invalid upon marriage.  You can make a will clearly stating that it is made in anticipation of your marriage to your future husband but otherwise you need to make a fresh will after marriage. Although some clauses in wills are also invalidated after divorce it is a good idea to update your will then as well.

I didn't interpret Lady_K's post as an intimation that she had married after she made the will but reading it again I can see that could well be what is meant. It was clear from her post though that a review of her will would be a good idea and that is what I homed in on.
  • Been meanng to do this for too many years. Thanks for the nudge in the direction. Never knew this offer existed.
    Now in hand.

Only the legal profession could get away with the notion that will writing is FREE during November, and then refuse to do it unless at least £50 donated to charity as happened to my mother-in-law yesterday, at her nearest solicitor in Kent.

I personally very much regret that I suggested she do it, especially as I had not re-read this thread since recommending it to her 6 weeks ago. She feels she was blackmailed into contributing to charity and I share that view. Were I closer than 200 miles from her I would have taken her myself to avoid the embarrassment, and challenged the unmoved solicitor.

  • My will was written up by a very nice solicitor in Bristol who told me "Whatever your deal is with willaid - you sort that out yourself". When I told him that I was supposed to show him my receipt, he just looked a little concerned and asked me, "Am I supposed to do something with it?"!

Apparently I was his third freebie appointment of the day!

How did you get on on Monday, Smitty?

    Sorry for the late reply.

    I bottled it!

I decided my online will (which i can change as often as I like) wasn't that bad after all :) So i canceled my appointment with Rothera Dowson.

    Thanks for your reply

What kind ofwill do you get?

My mother passed away on the 23rd of dec,and this made me decide to make a will.

I rang two solicitors, and the price was the same £130 +vat for a joint will.

I thought we would have a simple will.

if i die first,it all goes to my wife,

if she dies first it all comes to me,

if we both die together it all goes to our only son..

    simple?

but what about inheritance tax implications?

our house is only worth about 100k,but with both our employers death in service payments and other assets it soon adds up.... the names on our house deeds may have to be changed etc

we ended up making a will which cost £350 +vat,is that the going rate

I am going back on friday to read through and sign.
