A move in the right direction. Would be better if it was full allowance transferred which is representative of a mother's sacrifice.

I'm sure it is superb news but it usually never is.

Giving the £1,000 allowance to one group of people means that the value of the allowance will be taken from elsewhere.

It's political economics trying to gain favour with a certain group of the voters.

I wonder if this is aimed at mothers in general. Or will it be restricted to wives? What about unmarried house-husbands? What about same-sex marriage partners?

According to Clapton, I am a totally ignorant idiot.

Only the modern day Tory Party could try to impose its sense of morality on a nation where marriage is rapidly going out of fashion.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

Of course it'll apply to same sex marriages and house husbands. Anything else would be unthinkable and probably illegal.

It covers every marriage/partnership according to what I've read.

Then you maybe surprised the majority still aspire to marrying one day. May help bring some needed much needed cohesion and stability to society. Particularly when the focus far too often is on minority groups and interests.

Well there've been new tax breaks aimed at couples who both work by this govt and the last (childcare tax allowances, tax credits etc), while parents who look after their own children have been penalised by independant taxation. This redresses the balance a tiny bit.

Though there is of course the inconsistency that unmarried couples won't benefit yet they'll still be treated as a couple when it comes to benefits.
  • the figure i saw was £750 giving away £150 (wow),its a throw back to the 50s which will devalue those who chose not to marry, and the cost is supposed to be £600m which is exactly what they say the bedroom tax will raise(although thats a lie)

Of course its a lie because there is no such thing as a 'bedroom tax' and thus it cant raise anything. It might *cost* a bit less though.
