CSA on low income

Do they calculate CSA payments on a percentage of your income received or on what's left after living expenses?
My son is currently trying to get his set but is on a very low income at present.
They have also asked for arrears from the original date of application even though the mother stopped the application at that time and restarted recently. The arrears are only £150 but can he offer an extra £5 a month until cleared? They want £90 this month then £60
Also, as the mother has moved out of the area and doesn't drive my son picks up his child and takes him back which costs a fortune that they won't take into account. The mother also won't help in sharing the cost of this either.

It is a set % on his net income. He should have a reduction for any overnight visits the child is with him.
With regard to the arrears, I dont think £5 a month will suffice, they will probably expect more and can take upto 40% of his net pay (to the minimum levels) if he dosent agree a sensible arrangement.0 -
He is only bringing home £80 a week due to his disability he is struggling to do more hours. Is it 10% they take?0

if hes genuinely only taking £80/week, then the assessment will be £5 flat rate and we cannot ask for arrears at all until his income goes up, you need to get ure son to notify us of this change as he was obviosly assessed on wage information that is now not relevant to his income, id do this quickly as the later you leave it the more chance a payment will be due.
im interested in what the £80 is for, is it wages or a benefit? Does he have overnight care of his child, if he does the assessment becomes nil at that point as hes earning less than £100 and has some shared care, pm me if you want some more advice.0 -
No, because he earns under £100 a week it will be the flat rate of £5/week (this is planned to increase to £7 at some point in the future). This is the same amount he would have to pay if he were on JSA or ESA.
The only difference is that if he were on the flat rate because of benefits, it would be reduced to £0 if he qualified for shared care (52 nights a year). There is no reduction for shared care if you are on the flat rate due to income under £100. It just stays the same.I often use a tablet to post, so sometimes my posts will have random letters inserted, or entirely the wrong word if autocorrect is trying to wind me up. Hopefully you'll still know what I mean.0 -
i was assuming as its such a low amount and a disability was mentioned chances are its a benefit, it would reduce to nil, after re-reading my post its not clear what i meant so i apologize.0
