999 (nine hours nine persons nine doors) is a DS puzzle game like that. It's on Amazon for £11.58 but you might be able to get it cheaper if you look around. Amazon link http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aksys-Games-NDS-13-Hours-Persons/dp/B003VR5PPY, under the recommendations list there's a bunch of other games that seem similar (I've only had a quick glance though).
I don't play these games on DS but I've played similar on my iPad.I SUPPORT CAT RESCUE! Visit Cat Chat to support cat rescue too.

Hey Lillie-put
you have excellent taste in games as the Layton games are superb.
The closest I have found to the Professor Layton series is a game called Mays Mystery: The Secret of Dragonville.
This is very similar in both style and execution and has around 300 puzzles. The best thing is that it is very cheap now (usually less than a tenner in GAME, HMV etc) as it came out a few years ago. This will play on a regular DS.
Just to be sure - you know there are 4 Professor Layton games on regular DS right? (Curious Village, Pandora's Box, Lost Future and Spectre's Call/Last Spectre).
Also second the recommendation above for the Phoenix Wright series. A bit different but great fun.
Enjoy!0
