  • Think you to everyone for their replies, it has been gratefully received.

I am going to try 'padding' out food with other items and see how we get on. We have an 'on our own day' today so I will try and tackle the issue with him then. I am a people pleaser unfortunately and I would rather go without myself than everyone else go without! :o

Kids are out at a concert tonight and I have a bacon and egg pie for tea but DH said last night, why don't we have pizza instead.......think the answer will be NO! :rotfl:
  • why not try the 'palm ' portion About the size of the palm of my hand is roughly what i have but I do load up on veg as I really enjoy them and have at least 2-3 veg with my meals.I do like decent sausages with a good meat content so two meaty bangers are more than enough or three if they are chipolata's.I have just bought some chunky chicken thighs to cook for tomorrows buffet at my Dds and once I have coated them with herbs and spices and maybe a spoon of garlic soft cheese inside and wrapped a bacon rasher around and cooked them they will be quite filling once cold as snacks.years ago when rationing was on the cheese portion was roughly the size of a matchbox per person per week. Most folk would extend it by grating it up and adding grated carrot to it if going in a sandwich.Grated carrot and oats or lentils were added to most things to 'bulk ' them out.needs must when the devil drives and you have to be practical I have steak as a treat and definitely not a mid week meal.I usually buy it either reduced or when on special off and freeze it.

I did buy the steak reduced but it was still over £3 for the three of us. I am going to meal plan for the rest of the week and next week.

I am definitely going to try putting extra veg or bulking out items rather than putting more meat on the plate.

DH came from a family that was fairly well off as his Dad worked for NASA on the rockets so they have always lived fairly well and now he is nearly 50 it has come as a bit of a shock to him! :rotfl:

You may find that pies with a good strong sauce are a way to bulk out smaller quantities of meat as well.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

I find that mushrooms have a 'meaty' texture so serving plenty of them in a casserole makes up for not too much meat. Roast potatoes and yorkies seem to be a popular way of filling plates too.
