Wasted food on a boating holiday

There were 8 of us plus skipper on a 7 day holiday. I watched in bemusement as 100kg of watermelon was loaded, along with a huge box of tomatoes, a whole carrier bag of aubergines, two carrier bags of fresh figs,a carrier bag of black grapes, a carrier bag of onions, a carrier of courgettes, a carrier of cucumbers, several pounds of cheese and prosciutto ham, 6 litres of yogurt and many bags of biscuits/crisps/ritz crackers/peanuts/raisins. We wondered how all this was going to be eaten.

Sure enough, 3 days into the sail, much of the veg and fruit had gone rotten and had to be thrown overboard. We also had loads of bread and criossants that needed to be jettisoned.

There was no consultation about what went aboard and the final insult was that we were presented with a bill at the end of the holiday for 150 euro as our quarter share of the cost of the food.

Take the bill, deduct what was thrown away & pay for what you ate.

Oh, and next time, discuss the food plans before anyone goes shopping!

I'd be doubly annoyed as the fruit and veg should last longer than that unless they were stored very badly. What a waste :(

The bread could have been made in to bread and butter pudding, or garlic bread, or added to a stew to bulk it out.

There was no consultation about anything - food, places to visit, activities on land etc.

We learned a valuable lesson about not taking things for granted (like sharing and consideration) and will not be going on holiday with anyone else unless there is a firm plan for catering and activities.

We couldn't cook much as the boat oven was tiny and you can't cook when the boat is in sail anyway (too dangerous).

I only posted this to show other MSEers that there are people out there who aren't a bit like us. Shocking indeed.

Sounds disgraceful as so much of the food sounds yummy! You weren't boating off Turkey were you? I just love aubergines and they're so plentiful and cheap there.

We often holiday in s/c houses with friends and family and it's essential to have a meal plan (albeit with flexibility built in) and a shopping list and a prior arrangement as to how it's going to be paid for. Plus who's going to be doing the cooking, washing up etc. etc.;)
