Can I ask, did you find a way to compensate your victim? Did you apologise properly, find out if they still suffer because of the attack, and try to help them not to let it change their lives?

Crime wrecks peoples lives. I needed to move house after a burglary, as my wife could never sleep there soundly again. The thieves stole her only keepsakes that she had to remind her of her father who died. Her sentence is truly life long, imposed by someone who just didn't care, who'd happily traumatise a family for small financial gain.

That sounds awful. Something similar happened to one of my family members years ago. Were they ever caught? But in any case, what if they were caught and genuinely wanted to turn over a new leaf? They wouldn't be able to especially with a conviction for burglary. So they may as well continue along the criminal path they found themselves in for whatever reason. So what do we have?......many more wrecked lives. But of course, this might make many people feel that at least they're getting their pound of flesh.

Could you retrain to do something where you can start your own business and not be tied to working for somebody else?

My Dad's neighbour started off running a market stall selling sweets, grew the business, made money, now run a property building company in addition to the sweets business which is now wholesale. There's nobody asking questions about their past.

Perhaps you could look at other options than being employed, to make your own job.

Thank you. That is the route I would like to take. But I'm finding it quite difficult to come up with something. Maybe I'm not very entrepeneurial.

Have you got a vehicle you could put a roof rack on? Could you get started with something like window cleaning? A few weeks pounding the streets with leaflets could help you start a round.

Wrong time of year for it now, but are you any good at gardening? There's always people looking for some garden maintenance through the spring and summer - again leaflets through doors, adverts in post office windows etc.

It will take time, but plenty of others have built businesses from scratch.
