I am rapidly running out of jam jars for my HM jam and chutneys. I do have a large number of coffee jars (the nice ones with the glass lids). Does anyone know if these can be used as a substitute?
(I will not have time to check for replies until tomorrow night).
Thanks in advance

Yes but you will need cellophane lids and wax discs - plastic lids, or Douwe Egberts jars with plastic-lined glass lids are no good, which is what I assume you're alluding to;).
The Douwe Egberts jars will work fine with cellophane.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

I sterilise jam jars and lids in the dishwasher, including the Doue Egbert ones, though separate the plastic from the glass, so there is no water trapped in the lid. If they are ordinary coffee jars such as Nescaf! I discard the card liner, but sterilise the plastic lid in the dishwasher.after filling with hot jam, I then put an oversized circle of waxed paper from a cereal packet on the rim of the jar and screw the plastic lid on top of the waxed paper, trimming any excess to about 1cm. This acts as a liner and makes a reasonable seal.
After filling the hot Doue Egbert jars with hot jam or chutney, I put the plastic lid on and then the glass lid. It normally seals quite well. I haven't had a problem with mould at all. However I find the jars of opened jam get much stickier as the jam sticks to the plastic rim, which is annoying.
I also tend to give away jam in coffee jars as I don't get most jars back. Those who like my jam tend to eat it fairly quickly so little chance of mould.
I'd go ahead with the coffee jars.0 -
I've used peanut butter jars with plastic lids for jam without any problem.0
