Can anyone recommend any very basic recipe books for a friend who's moving into his own place and just wants the basics? like porridge, pasta sauces, soups etc.. nothing over complicated.

How to Boil An Egg is a good one for people branching out on their own. Written by Jan Arkless available from amazon. Sorry but I'm not good at links! It assumes no prior knowledge of cooking so explains all the terms used in a simple fashion.

I bought my son one intended for students when he first started to cook. It was ideal, not only the basics but also some meals using the very cheapest ingredients :D

I let my mind wander and it never came back!
