More likely it will be gasified. (There's apparently a lot of it under the North Sea, so excavation might be tricky.)Graham_Devon wrote: »I just don't get why labour have done this. ....
Neither do I. 'Hostage to fortune' is the phrase that springs to mind.0 -
One aspect of this policy I haven't seen mentioned much is that people already do frequently have the opportunity to freeze their energy tariff & tons of them simply don't bother. So even ignoring everything else about this policy that is dumb, are they really expecting it to win many votes?0

It probbaly is but when it comes to turning lights out and prices become ever more ridiculous then methinks it will become much more attractive"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

A personal freeze is jus tas ineffective as this freeze will be.
1.) the cost of the freeze is already built in to the frozen pricing.
2.) the step back onto the escalator is bigger at the end of the freeze.
The only thing a personal freeze gives you is price certainty for a period."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

They don't have a great reputation on the economy anyway. And now, the headlines are reading "Ed Milliband in Economic Vandalism".
It's probably one of the worst things I've seen to come from a party conference.
The overarching idea of reducing energy bills is great, but this is so full of holes it's absurd.
I honestly think on this one they haven't thought about the detail, only thought about how it might raise some votes and cheers and have seemingly shot themselves in the foot. Big speech, little or no detail in the hope of confusing people and gaining support on the back of cost of living pressures.
Read my post above - in the run up to the election prices will be rising quickly as suppliers anticipate of the cap and Labour will be promising to fix them. The proportion of the electorate this is aimed at will not be interested in the logic of what is going on only that they are struggling to pay the electic bills and labour are promising to stop the increases. As noted elsewhere with a strong UKIP performance Labour can win a parliamentary majority with 33% of the popular vote.I think....0 -
Still price fixing by govt works well, go to Venezuela and ask for some toilet paper...

Country taxation policies play into the pricing amongst others AIUI.
The household prices reflect the UK's low tax on fuel. (Does Red Ed want to complain about that too?)
The figures for industrial fuel DO NOT include refundable taxes and levies, which are reclaimed by companies ~ and UK prices are still far better than average. If I don't reply to your post,
you're probably on my ignore list.0 -
I once camped at a Forestry Commission site and the hard/shiny toilet paper had Property of HM Government stamped on every sheet.

Because they have increased prices in advance of the fix which obviousy makes extra profit plus labour are fixing prices so that they don't really have to compete against each other once the fix has been brought in (note as part of the agreement they must grumble as much as possible about what a bad deal they are getting as it is all just the publicity that labour wants to generate). Look at 'regulated monopolies' like water supply, I don't see to many companies struggling under only being allowed to earn a 'fixed' rate of profit, simply maximise capital employed and senior execs pay to make sure you don't earn too much.
I'm sure that will their objective, however we do have some regulatory control in place that will have be able to review any rises.0 -

.
Do we pay higher taxes elsewhere? What are the personal allowances like in other countries, tax bands etc.
Swings and roundabouts, apples and pears.
I am not claiming that our prices are high.
It would be nice to see transparency in how actual purchase cost wholesale prices transfer into retail front of house prices."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
