slow cooker suggestions for a buffet

I am having some people round and intend to just do a buffet style meal so people can help themselves as they please. As it will be getting colder I would also like to provide something hot, ideally left in the slow cooker.
Any suggestions what I can put in it? I don't really want to be making soup as I'm no good at it
I don't eat it myself as I don't like it and the last time I made it for guests no one ate it
Thanks

I would do some chilli or a curry and just put the slow cooker on 'keep warm' setting. Would be easy then to just dig in when people feel like it.
Or a corned beef hash maybe? Or any kind of stew, Jamie Oliver does a nice beef stew with tinned toms that would be good? This is WAY more fun than monopoly.0 -
Curry/chilli are probably the best ideas for the slow cooker but then you'd have to offer crusty bread or jackets to go with it unless you ant to do rice.
My DH has a massive family and when we have them round at Christmas I always do hot food. Favourites are lasagne or a beef in red wine casserole.
For the lasagne I make a couple in huge, foil trays and then a few smaller ones. Prepare in advance then just put in the oven when ready. We eat the big ones first and then if the smaller ones aren't used I freeze them for the family. Alongside that I do plenty of salads and crusty bread plus cold puddings and cheeses.
For the casserole, I make some massive ones in the oven with all the veg in the casserole (carrots, onions, mushrooms). Then I do new potatoes on the hob. Sometimes, do potatoes in advance and ping them in microwave before serving. Casseroles can be pre-cooked and reheated on hob/kep warm in SC.0 -
I do a huge chilli in the slow cooker & have lots of jacket spuds in the oven.
I also do salads & cold meat as an alternative to go with the jacket spuds.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -
Hotpot/stew/savoury mince/corned beef hash/sausage casserole.. with mash, new potatoes or jackets.. I'd avoid spicy stuff if older people will be there most of the ones I know don't eat spicy food.. boring traditional bog standard stereotypical English food .. but I'm not 'older' and I wouldn't eat spicy stuff either.
Could you borrow a second SC and do a spicy and a traditional dish? Or a hot plate maybe?
If there is salad/sarnies/cooked meat/quiche/pasta salads it is probably plenty.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

i've not tried it myself but believe pulled pork is very nice done in a slow cooker, serve it on bread rolls or with rice maybe.'there goes an old transexual, last seen heading south,

Another vote for Chilli, can match it with jacket spuds, bowls of rice, grated cheese, sour cream (or OS plain yoghurt), nachoes, tortillas, salads etc cheap and filling for lots of people and more importantly easy on you - more time to enjoy your guestsNote to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!

Potatoes always come out of my slow cooker hard so I wouldn't make stovies in it. Someone who knows what they are doing might :rotfl:.
I do make stovies in my pressure cooker, though.0 -
