Quick question for people who shop at Morrisons

Hi all,

Not sure if this belongs here or on the food shopping and groceries board, but thought I would get more views and quicker response here.

Not sure if everyone has seen the cashback offers for Halifax customers (thread here - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4770581) But I have an offer for 20% off a £100 shop at Morrisons.

Their website isn't very good for being able to go and compare prices, and they don't appear to be on supermarket comparison sites. As somebody who shops very savvy I was about to do a run to Costco this week for my ususal shop from there (toilet roll/bacon/cheese) and an asian cash and carry for my meat/spices/tinned tomatoes/coconut milk/rice etc - But I'm thinking with this offer it may work out cheaper to buy all these things in one shop from Morrisons. I notice they have some wine at half price at the moment which would be good with the extra 20% off, but I don't want to spend just for the sake of it.

So I guess my question is - what non-perishable items are good (i.e. cheapest) to stock up on at Morrisons? And could it be cheaper than Costco/cash and carry/Aldi to stock up here this time for anything?

Or indeed non-perishables that I can freeze - such as chicken I normally buy around 4-5 kilos, and portion up. But I would be looking to beat the cash and carry price for chicken, which I doubt I would beat at Morrisons.

Thanks in advance for any replies - could really do with getting this shop out of the way today if possible.

Cheers

Am not 100% sure as I don't shop at Costco (none near us), but I have found Morrisons on the whole cheaper than Sainsbury's where I used to shop before. Their fresh fruit and veg is very good quality. My local one also has an excellent Asian section with prices either comparable or cheaper than my local Asian shop. Not sure if they still have it on but they had some excellent offers on tinned tomatoes and rice recently. Lentils are also often on offer and I think last time I went in, they had an offer on frozen ginger and garlic.

I think it would be worth your while to go and have a look at any rate.

  • Brill, thanks mouche. Ginger and garlic are two of the things I buy fresh from the cash and carry and then spend some time peeling and chopping and freezing in ice cube trays, so if there isn't much in the cost then it could save me some time this time round buying ready prepped. Also saves the cost of petrol driving to Costco/cash and carry too.

Costco is very touch and go I find. Very cheap for brands, but not too hard to beat on most things if you don't mind buying own brand, and meat is generally cheaper at the asian places. So much so that I'm thinking about not renewing the membership this year as I'm buying so little there these days that I probably hardly break even on the membership cost. The best way to shop at Costco is to go armed with prices of things in your head and compare - just because you are buying in bulk it doesn't make it cheaper, and just because it is Costco - don't assume it will be cheaper.
