For this particular problem an amplifier will not be any help as both the wanted signal and the 'interfering' one will both be boosted by exactly the same amount.
For other problems they can be useful, particularly if 'masthead' devices. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Is the aerial pointing in the correct direction? ie towards the transmitter you want to receive from.0

Radio waves are very aetheric beasts, hard to pin down problems, but if you've had lots of problems during that month it may be worth getting an engineer to check the aerials are suited to digital TV. It could be that an analogue telly could just about lick onto the signal but digital is too marginal. Could also be things like water in the aerial cable, or other attenuators. Or it could be that you're in a marginal area and freesat is a better bet for you. It's not expensive.0

Just to clear up a few things
We are in an area where we and others we know have never had any issues with freeview reception. Our aerials are pretty new, they work and are pointing in the correct direction. As I said, before we decided to go LLF for a while, we had never had any issues with freeview, and since buying another licence, we had a period of excellent reception before all this. This is a very sudden and extreme deterioration of signal, which is still ongoing!
Having spoken to others, and having viewed our transmitter's page on ukfreetv, it is clear that there is a widespread issue here - BBC Hereford and Worcester have actually appealed for people to chat to them about the signal issues!0
