How to write a CV for retired person?

Options
Hi all,

My father in law has asked me to help him write a cover letter/CV for him.

He is soon to be retired, albeit a year early, and wants to have a little part time job, just to keep him ticking over.

What are you supposed to write in a CV/cover letter in this situation?!

Thanks for any help.

  • I would put something in the letter like:

'Although I am nearing retirement, I want to make the most of the experience I have gained in my field, and I still have a lot to offer. I am a reliable and dependable worker looking for a part time job, and would be happy to tell you more at interview about how I can contribute my skills and experience to your company. I am that rare thing - an experienced worker who is keen to keep up to date and learn new things to develop my skills still further.'
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • Don't mention it. They don't need to know and despite the fact they shouldn't make decisions based on age they probably will.

So just write out his qualifications and work experience and any skills or interests on the CV. In the covering letter refer to the points in the job description, tell them why you want the job (as in he wishes to work in that area, has an interest in it, the right skills etc.) and, where possible, why he wants to work for that company.

If they ask why he only wants part time there are other reasons he can give that won't make them judge based on age. So, he has hobbies/interests and wants more spare time to do them, for example.

    Thanks for your replies.

My father in law has worked in the same factory for his whole working life and has very few qualifications.

The job he is looking at is a little part time job delivering prescriptions between the pharmacy and the hospital/care home.

It is a little time filler for him, he doesn't have many hobbies as all he's really known is his work. So difficult to put across that he just wants to keep himself busy now that he is retired.

    does he know the place

a chat would probably be the best approach

they will be looking at reliability for a job like that.
