Creditor claims error on DMP

Hi all,

Hopefully someone can advise me, or perhaps has had a similar issue.

I started a debt management plan with CCCS/StepChange about 5 years ago and through the monthly statements was advised that my final payment would be in November 2013 - Nearly there!

My final creditor, Natwest, however is now stating that they made an error, and in fact I owe them almost double the remaining amount, meaning that instead of my last payment being in November 2013, it will now be March/April 2014!

Given that I have been advised of the former figure for the last 5 years, can they now claim an error?

They claim the error was discovered in August 2013, stating they had written to me, albeit to my previous address, and I have asked them to re-send this letter which hopefully provides a breakdown.

Has anyone experienced something similar, and if so, what was the outcome?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Be strong, be debt-free!

D

Await the letter and the explanation. Come back for advice when you have this. If you do owe the money they have 6 years from the last payment you made to them to claim.

But if they have suddenly decided for example to add a load of fees or slap interest on you - or they have discovered another account on which you owed money, it may be a different kettle of fish
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

I think this is also one for the financial ombudsmen. This isn't particularly fair.

Await the letter, dispute the amount if you feel it's wrong or unfair, then complain to the bank and then the Financial Ombudsmen.

  • Yep, complain, no matter what their excuse is. Telling you one thing for so long then changing it is incompetent at best and you might get lucky even if the amount is correct.
