New Council tax surchrges

Hi can anyone help me please. I live in a house with my husband and currently pay full council tax. We purchased a run down property 7 doors away last August with the view to rebuilding it and then we would move into the new house. I was granted Exemption A last August for 12 months on the basis the house needed major structural repair. We went through planning etc and building work started July 2013. I have just received a new council tax bill different to the one I received in April saying that Exemption A was abolished in April this year so my Exemption that i was granted 12 months on ended in April so it would be 8 months. Which is fair enough but they have slapped a 50% surcharge on the bill as well because the house is empty and unfurnished!!!!:(. I already pay full council tax and it is impossible to live in the other house as its only half a house. Anyone any ideas how to tackle this? i wrote to them explaing the situation and I received a letter back today basically saying tough its due!!

From 01 April 13 the council have the powers to levy up to 50% extra on any property that has been unoccupied and unfurnished for 2 or more years.
If the council have made the decision to do his and there are no technical reasons why this should not apply (e.g the council have calculated the 2 years wrongly) then there is no valid appeal other than asking the council to re-consider the premium.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
