Glasgow to tunbridge wells by train

Hi trying to find a cheap train fare to Tunbridge wells from Glasgow during feb 2013. Best I can find myself is £137 return. Can anyone help me get it cheaper? Could go any time in feb.

  • What date are you actually looking for? If Feb 2014, you are way too early to get bargains. And surely it would be cheaper to get a train to Kings Cross, tube to Victoria (?), then a separate ticket to Tunbridge?
  • Sorry Barbara I did mean feb14. New to the rail network so I just thought that glasgow to tunbridge was what you would search for. I have tried what you suggested and can see this is the best way to go as it looks as if that works out cheaper.

You'll get the best fare about 12 weeks before you travel. There won't be a direct train though so you might as well see if two separate trains are cheaper. Glasgow-London is the sort of route where you can get good bargains if you're flexible (ie get the 8am train rather than the 9am one)

I'd disagree about a separate ticket from London to Tunbridge Wells - that costs £17.60 single

As an example on a random date next month, a through advance ticket from Glasgow to Tunbridge Wells costs £6 more than an advance ticket on the same train to Euston, and includes the underground which alone is £4.50

It's going to be at least a couple of months before advance tickets become available for February

You'd need to check for your particular journey, but that is normally the case for through journeys to places in the southeast
  • Cheers for the replies. I shall wait till nearer the time then check the prices again. As an aside flying from glasgow to gatwick is available at £67 but I would still have to get to tunbridge from there.

That £137 isn't actually a bad price though for a walk on ticket

Should you decide to go for it there's no point in booking it until seat reservations, at least for the outward journey, come out - at about the same time as advance tickets

And Gatwick to Tunbridge Wells would be an easy if slightly fiddly (change at Redhill and Tonbridge) journey of a bit over an hour

Cheers Dzug1,flight to Gatwick then train as you suggested may be the way to go.

Thought it would be nice to jump on the train at Glasgow and miss all that palaver of getting to the airport early, checking in then trying to get to tunbridge from Gatwick but its probably the cheapest way.

Perhaps but the train ticket won't be anything like £137 when you actually book. I picked a random date in November (14th) and there were Glasgow-London tickets for £42.

BTW if you can get Ist class for an extra c£15 it's well worth it on that route. Non-stop free food and drink all the way plus free wifi.
  • Thanks Barbara thats a great price! If I could get that price in feb then I would jump at it,fed up with the hassle of flying so here's hoping they prices will be available in feb.

£137.80 is the cost of an Off Peak Return (SVR), which is valid by any train from Tunbridge Wells to London, free transfer by LU, and from London to Glasgow on any train commencing with the 0943 train and any subsequent departure.

On the return leg, which can be made any time within 1 month, it is valid from Glasgow to London on any train commencing with the 0540 train and any subsequent departure, free transfer by LU, and from London to Tunbridge Wells on any train.

There are no time restrictions between Tunbridge Wells & London. There are no time restrictions on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Refunds are given (less a £10 admin fee). Reservations not required. Available for purchase for immediate travel. The return journey may be broken at any intermediate station(s).

The ticket is also valid via other permitted routes, e.g. from King's Cross, St Pancras, etc but these are slower, and different time restrictions apply.

Two Advance Single fares will likely be cheaper, but are much less flexible, being only valid on the specified booked service between London & Glasgow, and appropriate connecting services, no break of journey is allowed, and refunds are not given (though changes can be made subject to a £10 admin fee and any applicable difference in fares).
