Store card statement not received vs late pymt charges

HiI took out a store card in jan but have not received any statements or had any contact, until now!
I've received a letter stating I owe almost double the original amount. It transpires it's the original purchase and late payment fees.
Am I legally obliged to pay the late payment charges? I didnt receive any statements so had no idea who to pay or where.
The store card company are insisting I pay.
I've never had any late payment charges with any card before.
Any one know any legislation I can quote in my favour?
Thanks

Not sure of any legislation I'm afraid. However if you phone the company's customer service (not store card provider) they may be a little more helpful. I use to work for a retailer and many of time I phoned our customer service on behalf of a customer and got the charges dropped every time (the card provider never helped, no use there.) I know some company's wont do this but if its a big firm, its worth a try. I dealt with all sorts of complaints on the shop floor, every time my customer service dropped the charges and dealt with the card provider on customers behalf.
