A few q's now that my car is written off

The internet has always has it's acronyms, some of them date back to the 80s, way before SMS text messaging was invented. Back then it was expected that people would know (or at least look up) the common ones such as FAQ.

Only problem now is the internet is much bigger, nobody bothers to look up anything, and various communities are all inventing their own. I've never been to mumsnet but still managed to look those ones up. It is annoying when people start using community-specific acronyms outside that community, however.0 -

I think it's childish to make new, I used the internet before Windows was borne, dial up, that's where acronoms were borne..
Do people actually know why the f keys exist? or tab/shift to go between tab filling?0 -

yep, but on the other hand it does save a lot of typing and once you know one, like DH then the rest DD, DS, DGD etc just drop into place. It's hardly rocket science0 -
DGD took me a moment to figure out. Guess I'm just getting old :P0

In which case don't you think you could have managed to just Google what DH meant (like I did the first time I came across it)?I think it's childish to make new, I used the internet before Windows was borne, dial up, that's where acronoms were borne..
Using acronyms to speed up communication is common and entirely reasononable, whether on internet forums or more broadly. Take DNA or PVC for example, or more car specific examples such as ABS, DPF or DMF. We all know what the latter ones mean but the OP may not. This does not make our use of them unreasonable. Inventing new ones, like inventing new words, is a part of any language.
This forum is actually a little unusual compared to others I have frequented in terms of using far fewer internet acronyms (IIRC, AFAIK, IRL, IMHO etc).0 -
Thanks to everyone for their replies!
I bought a car at the weekend, called the insurers and they have changed my policy to this new car
With their £15 charge for changing the car (really, £15 to delete and retype a registration number??), my insurance is £2 more expensive per year
I'm really happy with that, I honestly thought I would have to pay the remainder of the policy and take out a new policy for this car, basically paying for two policies with one car. Chuffed that it's only one! Can't think of anything smart to put here...0 -
that's good service, you should name the insurer, add them to whatever the opposite of "name & shame" is0
