Email competitions

When I enter a competition via email - How does it work, how do they pick a winner?

Reason I ask is that for several I have had a message back a few weeks later saying that my message has been deleted without being read.

I assume that means that I have not won or does it mean that my entry has not even being considered?

If it's a comp without any effort involved e.g. a case of just sending your details or an answer to a question they will just pick a winner from all of the entries. They have no reason to look at all of the other entries once a winner has been decided. If it's a comp that is being judged on the effort involved then your email should not show as unread and deleted if the comp is being run fairly.
