dont buy a full suspension bike unless its for £1000+
cheap versions are terrible.
The rockrider 6.3 is a very good bike.

And Decathlon is a good place to buy a bike. But as you say probably there are more suitable bikes, depending on what he's using it for.0 -
Ok, so ignoring full suspension. Can anyone give me any recommendations as to a good mountain bike with hydraulic brakes for £500 under?
I said I had the Rockrider 5.1... I've just checked and it's actually the 8.1.
I've had it 3 years and it's been great. I even got hit by a car, denting the gear mechanism, but (somehow!) it was solid enough to take the impact without needing any adjustment!
As I say, it's 3 years old. I don't know if any better bikes have come onto the market since then, but at £500 it was a bargain. I managed to get the previous year's model for a 10% discount.
It's perfect for cross-country.
