Supermarket night shifts

OP most night positions at supermarkets are full time hours and doubt night working would be compatible with caring for your grandparents. Plus you also say about volunteering and I was wondering when the actual care for the grandparents would be?0

I work for one of the big supermarkets and for working three nights a week I earn £14,828.
Not a lot but don't forget my annual bonus!
And my defined benefit pension! 1.5% of salary for 5% contribution via salary sacrifice.... nice.
Staff discount card obviously, 10% off.
My dinner costs £1.20 in the canteen, flexibility, overtime potential, third party deals, christmas vouchers, time and a half on bank holidays and they even let you listen to mp3s!
Started as a christmas temp in 1st year of uni and I've been there ever since!
Note; a lot depends on which company you work for and your colleagues can make it or break it.
Part time work, coupled with some work that can be done from a laptop will get you on easy street and earning some decent money.
Honestly that is more than I can ever want- I just want enough money so I can give my parents some £ towards keep and food as living here for free for 21 years is long enough.
I have just read conflicting information on the internet is all- shall I just wait until a vacancy opens up and drop in my CV- or is it worth dropping it in on spec?
Also Sandman- I assume your salary has risen since you started? I don't suppose you could remember what it was when you did? I have read just under £6 plus about an extra £1 for nightshift allowance?0 -
And thankyou to everyone else who offered helpful information0

Tesco pay more than minimum wage - I think it's £6.66ph currently, plus a lot more for Sundays / Bank Holidays / Nights.
As retail goes - Tesco pays quite well (Aldi even better!)
not anymore, sunday and bank holidays pay the same as any other day now.
Years ago, it used to be 2x, then it was reduced to 1.5x, then 1.25x then to just 1x.
anyone who started before the reduction got to keep it, so all the staff that have been there for years still get 2x, but any new ones don't.
im not sure about night rate, when i worked nights there it was only a small amount more.
i was paid more when working nights at asda0 -

conflicting information regarding what? pay? Yes there is plenty.
Basic rate has gone up to £7.28.
Location pay is 45p/hour for me, more/none in some areas
Night premium 1 is £1.28 (between 10-midnight)
Night premium 2 is £2.18 (between midnight and 6)
Google 'very little helps pay deal 2013' and go to page 7 of the thread (it's an unofficial forum for rants and advice) to see for yourself.
Waiting for a vacancy to open up is bad idea in my opinion. If there are any they will be advertised online @ Tesco-careers.com. Never have I seen anything put on the in-store 'vacancy board' or whatever it is.
You could try going in and asking for a job application form. It's a small booklet with a few psychometric type questions and an availability questionnaire, be really flexible and you might just get a call next vacancy they have. Do this at a few different stores, I was employed by one Tesco when another phoned me up to offer me a job (I applied there before, soon after moving to university) so I don't think their recruitment is too joined up.
A lot of applications flood in for these posts though so you need luck on your side. Keep an eye on the jobcentre's site because I'm sure they post jobs there and phone round a bunch of local agencies and ask them if they're involved with Tesco. How I and a lot of others have got jobs in the last few years is by coming in with an agency and being offered a permanent contract (work hard, don't whine and be friendly - in that order). Heading towards Christmas I'd say this would be your best bet.
Edit - not sure on pay my handbook is several years out but it's not less than £6 - min. wage is over that! the internet is full of people throwing numbers around. It wasn't too much of a discount and I think it's just a 6 month wait for full pay anyway.
Best of luck though - it's commendable what you're trying to do.0
