Self employed/ sick notes

I am working for a company but I am self employed. I have been of sick for a week and will be off one more. The company want a letter of conformation from the doctor. I am not getting paid for being off do I have to get a letter even if I am self employed.

Do the terms of business you have with this client include such a provision? If not, as a self-employed person you are not required to produce evidence.

Are you truly self-employed? They are acting like employers if they feel they have a right to ask for such things (if it is not covered in your terms of business). Do they therefore say when you will do the work for them, where, how? Do they provide equipment to be used in this work?
  • Yes I am truly self employed,It does not say anything about sickness on the service agreement. I am a dog walker they get the clients and I walk the dogs. They get half of what I earn, I pay all my taxes etc. they don't provide anything else.

Who do the clients pay? The company or you?
Sounds like you are a sub-contractor.
  • They pay them
  • I signed a Declaration of Self Employed Status for them

I guess you need to look at the agreement, when I was self employed I didn't have to provide anyone with sick note or a letter. I didn't work I wasn't paid simple really.

It doesn't sound like you are self employed. Self employed don't get sick pay, so no need to prove anything.
