I put a mothball in my black non recycling bin. It repels the flies and no more maggots. I've had the revolting job of cleaning out a maggot infested bin and it's not pleasant

Thanks, Jules 2005! I will try that. Will tackle the malodorous bin tomorrow, chuck fish leftovers in the black bin from now on and recycle the rest via my friend's wormery - so hopefully no more nasty niffs from food waste hanging around in the heat for days on end. And happy worms too! Thanks everyone, much appreciated.

Cleaning the bin tomorrow will not be pleasant but well worth it - no more clouds of flies erupting from it when I go to chuck stuff in...eeuch

    have the same problem.

my local councils recycling system is rubbish, we get a black box they take cans, tins, glass, paper magazines textiles foil, NO plastic cardboard etc you have to take that yourself to the tip (as i dont drive i cannot recyle it) so mainly everything gets put in my bin i hate it, as im due to move i dont have a compost bin or similer so my wheeled bin is always full by 1st week, i do use reusable nappys so have cut out nappy waste.

my bin is never food hungry if i ate my boys leftovers i would be size of a house

We get the maggots as soon as the warm weather is here, I put dustbin powder in regularly, put leftovers in a bag tied up, and have a bin freshner in the bin. Will try the mothball tip, thanks for that. Back to cleaning the bin out every fortnight again in this warm weather. I hate the job.
  • We've had our bin collected fortnightly for the last 2 years and have never had a problem with smells or maggots, but I'm constantly reading the problems that people have.

I don't know what I do different

I clean my bin every year and use wheelie bin liners to keep it clean and have never had a problem. Some good tips though.

I use Teatree oil in the bottom of the bin, its not 100% but it helps. I noticed Zoflora advertising something but I havent read it completely, a gel thing that goes in the bottom of the bin?

We're on our third year of fortnightly collections and I have to say I've never had any problem with maggots, *flies or *rats. Granted I live out in the sticks, and theres grain storage not far away and pigs too, so *they are in the locality.

We only have papers collected, we're expected to recycle plastic, tins, cardboard and plastics ourselves (it would just be too bad if you didn't drive!)

I've only started a compost bin this year and it's amazing how much less I'm putting in the dustbin :o :T

The one thing I find that really make my bin smell is trimmings from raw chicken, they are truly disgusting
