I used to work for a major bank. 35 hours a week = 7 hours a day. I had one hour for lunch. My hours were actually 9am to 5pm, which is 8 hours - 7 hours paid work and 1 hour unpaid lunch. I believe most companies and the public sector work like this.

If I were ever required to work my lunch hour for an urgent business reason I would take the time when mutually convenient, e.g. leave an hour earlier one day, extra long lunch hour etc. Junior staff would be paid overtime if they had to work their lunch.

This is standard in public sector that you only get paid for the hours you work.

    .
Erm and very much so in the private sector too.

Varies in private sector from my experience.

I had one weekend job where I worked either 4 or 5 hours. If I worked 4 hous I had a 15 minute paid break. If I worked 5 hours I an additional 10 min paid break.

DD has worked in 2 stores. One store no paid break on a 6 hour shift, other store 20 minute paid break.

That's not a full time 5 day a week job though is it?

Some shops I guess pay for tea breaks and unpaid for lunch but in accounts, banking, office etc there is no such thing as a tea break.
